ATEX connector: For extended traction battery life

In intralogistics, industrial trucks and their traction batteries are often used in particularly polluted environments. However, it is essential for the functionality and safety of the traction battery that the battery surface and especially the poles of the individual battery cells remain clean. This is because once the terminals are contaminated, this significantly increases the risk of corrosion and leads to a loss of battery performance due to leakage currents at the battery surface. For such applications, it is therefore worthwhile to replace the normal standard connectors on the battery cells with ATEX connectors.

THE ADVANTAGE

“ATEX” is the abbreviation for “ATmosphère EXplosible” and stands for the European Directive 2014/34/EU on the placing on the market of explosion-proof electrical and mechanical equipment, components and protective systems. The connector, which was originally designed for use in hazardous areas, thus offers a decisive advantage that can also be used for traction batteries in polluted areas:

• Low maintenance and cost efficient connector
• High cleanliness of the battery terminals due to closed terminal cover
• Maintaining the performance of the traction battery despite external influences such as contamination
• Increased work safety when handling the battery
• Uncomplicated opening of the pole caps for maintenance purposes

So if vehicles with traction batteries are used in areas with a high degree of contamination, the ATEX connector is a simple way to significantly extend the battery’s service life and thus ensure the vehicles’ functionality in intralogistics. The ATEX connector can be included when ordering a new traction battery or can be retrofitted to cleaned batteries.
